Tourist tax cash for votes

Tourist tax cash for votes

The tourist tax has always been a bitter pill to swallow for the majority of visitors coming to the Balearics and the pandemic sparked calls from opposition parties for it to be scrapped or at least postponed until the hotel sector and travel industry at large got back on its feet.

And, all along, there have been questions over what the money raised from the tax is being spent on.

Like many things, the pandemic has proven to have been a good excuse for some politicians around the world to bury bad news, Brexit being a prime example, or keep certain issues under the radar.

However, last Saturday, the Balearic authorities dropped a bombshell when it was revealed that the best part of a million euros of funds raised by the tourist tax was apparently spent on the Spanish music awards in Palma.

All sorts of excuses and reasons were put out, that hosting the event demonstrated that Majorca is a safe destination to visit while it was good publicity.

Apart from the headline act Ed Sheeran, the Palma event failed to make any noise overseas, especially as it took place just 24 hours before the MTV Europe Music Awards which did have massive global repercussions.

I thought the tourist tax was all about sustainable tourism and for the greater good of Mallorca not just a few teenyboppers.
