The Government is creating a body of Covid Officers to make up for the lack of local police in villages.
The Minister of the Presidency, Mercedes Garrido advised Municipality Mayors and FELIB President, Antoni Salas of the initiative at at meeting on Wednesday.
120 jobs are being opened for the Covid Officers, who will be recruited from the people who applied for the Local Police during the last five years and didn’t get a place.
Their duties include enforcing ordinances on citizens, directing urban traffic, helping in case of an accident and resolving conflicts. They will not be able to make arrests or participate in criminal issues.
They are expected to start performing tasks within a month and Councils will be able to hire them to strengthen their Local Police staff. They will answer directly to the Mayor of each Municipality or the Local Police.
"It is a very positive and immediate measure and something we have wanted to initiate in recent months," said Salas. "It is a tool that is now available to Municipalities and will help manage the pandemic situation.”
According to some Mayors who attended the meeting, the Government is expected to approve a decree law on Friday, so that these Covid Officers can start work.
Some Mayors also proposed the possibility of incorporating Police Officers who are currently in second activity into the new body of Covid Officers.
Uniform
The Covid Officers will also wear a different uniform so that they are easily identified and differentiated from Local Police.
The Mayors welcomed the Government's initiative and are relieved that there’s an imminent solution to problems in the Municipalites.
"This is an immediate measure," they said. These agents will also be able to solve problems in several Municipalities, such as Inca or Santanyí, which had contracted private security.”
